Areas of Interest
We study the plant proteins, enzymes and metabolites involved in providing defense against pests and pathogens in plants.
We elucidate the specialized metabolites and their biosynthetic pathways in trees/plants of medicinal importance to develop biotechnological platforms for metaboite biosynthesis in the laboratory.
We explore the biomolecules mediating the arms race between plants and herbivorous pests, with an objective to identify the molecular components for plant defense and insect adaptations.
About Us
The Plant and Insect biology lab was established in 2014 at IBB, SPPU Pune. We are now a small research group Led by Dr. Vaijayanti Tamhane. Ph.D students and M.Sc project students are involved in research endeavours. We explore plant and insect systems and their interactions using molecular, biochemical, biotechnological and Omics based tools to elucidate the mechanisms ranging from plant defense to insect xenobiotics, and molecular farming to plant nanotechnology. We aim to integrate the findings to develop sustainable bio-prospective solutions for agriculture, environmental detoxification and biopharmaceuticals.

Principal Investigator
Dr. Vaijayanti Tamhane started the Plant and molecular biology lab 10+ years ago in IBB which is jointly merged with the Department of Biotechnology. She has been working in multiple areas of Biotechnology. Some of them are plant insect interaction, plant defenses, ecology and diversity, etc.
